Another Stretch

Embracing discomfort in growth is like stretching to remove a kink in our backs. It may feel like a load off in the moment, but to hold that stretch for an extended time, let’s say an hour, may be pushing it. In life, holding the stretch is required. As life evolves, we must evolve with it, and sometimes that may require that we stretch outside our comfort zones and then stretch again beyond that. The benefits of this discomfort are immense, leading to personal and professional growth that can propel us to new heights.

Life is a gift, and understanding discontentment is a crucial part of our journey. There are times when we are discontented with our current situation, and there are times when we have simply outgrown our current assignment; this is the evolution of life. Discontentment arises when we overlook and discard our current circumstances; we live in a space of bitterness, disgruntlement, and joylessness. Sometimes it’s a Holy discontentment where God is calling us to expand, and sometimes it’s a discontentment focused on self-ambition. Regardless of where you stand, understanding the difference is crucial for personal and professional growth.

As we journey in life, we learn more and become more curious about other things that may require us to upskill in our field of work. At times ,it may be a natural progression, and other times, it may be another stretch. In the workforce, we hear about stretch assignments, which could be tasks like leading a cross-functional team, spearheading a new project, or taking on a role in a different department. These are tasks or projects given to an employee that go beyond one’s current skill level, experience, or job description. These assignments are designed to challenge, develop, and grow one’s capabilities.

Being clear about your career path will help you develop the skill sets you need to attain the opportunities you desire. Discussing opportunities with your leadership about the career path or interest you would like to pursue will place you in a real-world learning lab, helping you move outside your comfort zone and prepare for the next level in your career.

Life, as we live it, will always require something more profound than the soft places we settle; it calls for courage when the road is unclear and faith to stretch again. It’s not always fun, but to be agile, or embarace this fast pace changing world, the stretch will always be required because growth doesn’t come in ease—it comes in motion that requires us to discard our unstretched potential to pulling us to learn, to grow, to be skilled in our craft, to be relevant and to keep moving forward.

Wherever you find yourself, remember that there are always areas you can explore to grow in your field or area of passion. It’s time for another stretch. By actively seeking out these areas for growth, you can take control of your personal and professional development, feeling empowered and proactive in your journey.

21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.

22 And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.
